Securing Nuclear Waste
Introduction
No safe, permanent solution has yet been found anywhere in the world for the nuclear waste problem. In the U.S., a high-level radioactive waste deep repository site has been identified at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. However, this facility is mired in delays and technical flaws. Reactor fuel remains stored on site with inadequate protection. Attempts to revive reprocessing - a dirty and expensive method that does little to solve the waste problem - are underway in the U.S. Congress. Beyond Nuclear opposes the Yucca Mountain waste dump and advocates for an end to the production of nuclear waste and for securing the existing reactor waste in hardened on-site storage.

Barnwell South Carolina Dump Closes to all but Three States
A successful campaign waged by the Sierra Club and others ensured that, starting July 1, 2008, South Carolina would no longer play host to the country's "low-level" radioactive waste, largely originating from civilian nuclear reactors. Aside from the three "compact" states - South Carolina, New Jersey and Connecticut - 36 states now face the reality of having nowhere to send their "low-level" waste. Of course, the first step, as advocated by Beyond Nuclear and others, is to stop making more waste. Read more here about the actions that led to Barnwell's closure.
