Say No to Nuclear Subsidies. The nuclear industry is jockeying for the biggest taxpayer money grab in history - the only way it can move to new construction. Nuclear industry CEOs are on record stating that without 100% subsidization, no new nuclear reactors will be built in the U.S. The Lieberman-Warner climate change bill was withdrawn last month but will revive in 2009. The earlier version could have handed the nuclear industry at least $500 billion in taxpayer subsidies, equaling the total amount of subsidies it has received over the past 50 years. GAO Report Confirms NRC Ignored Reactor Fire Safety Issues. A new Government Accountability Office report released this week shows that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has for years known about but ignored violations of federal fire safety laws at U.S. reactors. Read more here.

At a recent gathering of supporters of Congressman John Hall (D-NY), Pete Seeger led an inspirational sing-a-long with some old favorites including the Woody Guthrie anthem, This Land. Seeger, unwavering in energy and zeal at 89, ensured the audience joined in and, of course, "harmonized!" Beyond Nuclear's Linda Gunter shot this video of the memorable occasion. The Energy Secretary who "wasn't there." Watch Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), described by a colleague as "a terrier with a squeaky toy" take apart Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman during a recent hearing before the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming which Markey chairs. Markey challenged Bodman to explain why the Bush administration was attempting to sell nuclear power to Saudia Arabia when, as Markey put it, "Saudi Arabia is the Saudi Arabia of solar." People’s Petition to Know and Protect

Every U.S. nuclear reactor releases radioactivity into the air and water during routine operation. But virtually every U.S. reactor has been leaking radioactivity into the surface and ground water and even beyond the reactor boundaries. In some cases, the reactor owners never told the public about the leaks. When the leaks were made public, the utilities downplayed their potential for harm. Yet scientists agree there is no “safe” level for exposure to radiation and chronic exposure can even increase health risks, especially to children (including in-utero) and to pregnant women.

Our petition demands that utilities identify all off-site pathways of radioactive water from reactors; that the public be immediately informed about all radioactive leaks from nuclear reactors; and that more protective and precautionary radiation standards be developed, implemented and enforced.
